A resume is a recruitment tool used to introduce an applicant to an employer and grants an overview of the applicants education background, work experience, and job history. A resume also works to market an applicant in a way that successfully conveys the benefits that the person brings to an employer. There is no standard format for creating a resume, though there are a few conventional formats that may be used depending on preferred presentation style. All resume formats generally present the same information but differ in design. Resume styles include the reverse chronological resume, functional resume, and the hybrid resume. The most common format used to create an effective resume is the reverse chronological format. The main body of the reverse chronological resume is the list of professional experience. Experience is listed from newest to oldest and conveys the trajectory of a career from some point in the past through the present. Similarly, education is listed with the most recently attained degree at the top. Finally, work experience is listed with the current (or most recent) job first. Each section lists the beginning and end dates for each experience. A second format, called the functional resume, ignores the general chronology of experience and focuses on skill areas and job functions. This form of resume is aimed at highlighting skills, education, and other experience directly relevant to the position being applied for. Functional resumes summarize experience in blocks of related material and spotlight specific competencies and experience. Functional resumes are best used for applicants changing careers or when applying for a job requiring a very specific set of skills.
The exact process varies by bank, but here is how it generally works. After you apply, the HR Department compiles all the resumes into resume books, usually in alphabetical order. Then they send the resume books to the relevant recruiting teams, consisting of investment bankers. For the standard Investment Banking Summer Analyst and Summer Associate programs, the banks usually organize the recruiting teams by schools. Each schools recruiting team usually consists of bankers from that particular school. So the Georgetown recruiting team will review Summer Analyst applications from Georgetown. Harvard Business School recruiting team will review Summer Associate applications from HBS. You get the idea.
Online and social resumes are a bit trickier than standard resumes, as there are no standardized resume templates for social network profiles. It takes time and attention to build a strong, compelling personal brand and targeted professional profile. However, social profiles are a must for todays jobseeker, as they are not only a source for web identity, but also are in some cases the actual method by which you apply to a job with a corporation. With the arrival of the Internet, most employers are now requiring that resumes be submitted electronically into applicant tracking systems, rather than faxed or submitted on paper. This practice saves potential employers a great deal of paperwork, but presents some challenges for job seekers. First, when submitting a resume electronically online to a potential employer, the job seeker needs to check the job posting carefully to see if the employer is requiring a particular format. The most popular format currently is .doc, which is the old Word format from Microsoft Word 1997-2003, although there are some employers that will prefer other formats, including Adobe (.pdf) and ASCII (.txt). Nothing will get a job seeker rejected more quickly than failing to follow the directions in the job advertisement. Care must be taken to include relevant keywords and jobs in the resume, as recruiters will typically find an applicants resume by performing searches within their applicant tracking system. Second, many potential employers also take advantage of online resume databases and job boards, such as Monster, Career Builder, Dice, or Indeed. Taking advantage of these services, employers perform a search through the job resume database looking for possible matches. This practice requires the job seeker to try to include key words common to the position he or she is seeking in order to help the job resume database find that particular resume.
