In the Investment Banking Analyst and Associate-level recruiting processes, the resume plays a disproportionately important role. It is the document bankers look at to decide whether to invite you to an interview. But the job application is not the only time your resume plays a critical role. It also helps in the selection for competitive clubs and events. It is necessary in networking, when you send the resume to the bankers before the informational chats. And it serves as the backbone of your answer to the most important interview question: Walk me through your resume. In other words, half the battle is won just by having a solid resume. Given its importance, you would be surprised by the sheer volume of poorly structured and written resumes out there. Technology job candidates usually make one of two critical errors on their resumes either the document is excessively long with excruciating detail on every assignment ever completed, or too short with hardly any descriptions at all. There needs to be some middle ground your resume should be succinct yet effectively showcase your achievements. For each position you have held, give a brief synopsis of the scope of your responsibility. Then show how your performance benefited the company. Give examples of how past initiatives led to positive outcomes such as enhanced efficiency, faster time-to-market, monetary savings, etc. Accomplishments are most powerful when they are measurable, so include actual performance figures whenever possible. Focus on your most impressive technical projects/accomplishments. What types of challenges did you face? What did you do to overcome the challenges? How did your performance improve the organizations bottom line?. For contract work in technology, provide a bulleted list of your top projects, indicating the company (or type of company if confidential), reason for hiring you, scope of your project, your specific approach to the project, challenges/obstacles faced, work performed, and benefits to the company. If you are new to the technology field and concerned about a lack of experience, consider offering free or low-cost technical services to charitable organizations, friends, family, or local businesses. Doing so allows you to hone your craft and show related work or volunteer experience on your resume. Also, pursue as much training as possible to get up to speed. Entry-level candidates should focus on their potential in the field, ability to learn challenging concepts quickly and motivation to succeed in the industry.
Online and social resumes are a bit trickier than standard resumes, as there are no standardized resume templates for social network profiles. It takes time and attention to build a strong, compelling personal brand and targeted professional profile. However, social profiles are a must for todays jobseeker, as they are not only a source for web identity, but also are in some cases the actual method by which you apply to a job with a corporation. With the arrival of the Internet, most employers are now requiring that resumes be submitted electronically into applicant tracking systems, rather than faxed or submitted on paper. This practice saves potential employers a great deal of paperwork, but presents some challenges for job seekers. First, when submitting a resume electronically online to a potential employer, the job seeker needs to check the job posting carefully to see if the employer is requiring a particular format. The most popular format currently is .doc, which is the old Word format from Microsoft Word 1997-2003, although there are some employers that will prefer other formats, including Adobe (.pdf) and ASCII (.txt). Nothing will get a job seeker rejected more quickly than failing to follow the directions in the job advertisement. Care must be taken to include relevant keywords and jobs in the resume, as recruiters will typically find an applicants resume by performing searches within their applicant tracking system. Second, many potential employers also take advantage of online resume databases and job boards, such as Monster, Career Builder, Dice, or Indeed. Taking advantage of these services, employers perform a search through the job resume database looking for possible matches. This practice requires the job seeker to try to include key words common to the position he or she is seeking in order to help the job resume database find that particular resume.
