Be sure to use appropriate keywords liberally throughout your resume, as recruiter and employers often use software tools to find resumes. Examine the job description and frame your experience in light of that single position. Use the words within the job description when discussing your work experience and applicable skills. A direct consequence of this behavior is that each job for which you apply should receive its own personalized resume. Include the most important information at the top of the resume. Your previous work experience should be one of the first sections listed. When discussing previous experience and skills, prioritize by placing the most impressive and relevant information first. While there is much you can do to make your resume stand out in a positive way, there are several behaviors that need to be avoided. Do not share negative information. For example, writing a list of complaints about your last job does not add to your value as an employee. Do not include especially old or irrelevant work experience. Never include personal information such as your religion, sexuality, political leanings or other nonessential details. And, perhaps the most important resume tip, never lie. Lying on a resume can immediately ruin your credibility and your chances of getting the job.
When it comes to resume format and design, opt for a clean layout. A recent study from the job site Ladders found that resumes with so-called F-pattern and E-pattern layouts, which mimic how our eyes tend to scan web pages, hold a recruiters attention for longer than those aligned down the center, or from right to left. There is no one specific, best, font for resumes. You should use the same font style throughout, Leavy-Detrick says, but play with different weights and sizes to draw a recruiters eye to key parts of your resume. Sans serif fonts usually work best — Franklin Gothic, Calibri, and Avenir (the last of which we used for the attached template) are three of Leavy-Detrick is favorites.
After glancing through an entire page of your experiences, bankers arrive at the bottom of your resume: the Additional section. Frankly, this section wont get you an interview on its own. If you have poor academics and work experiences, an incredible Additional section wont save you. However, it can make a difference if interviewers are on the edge. It can also be the tie breaker if interviewers are debating between you and another candidate. Having an eye-catchy Additional section might just win them over. Another reason the Additional section is important is that it often comes up in interviews. Interviewers often refer to the bottom of your resume towards the end of the interview. And what you write in the Additional section can steer the conversation towards these topics. In this section, you can include other qualifications that might be relevant to investment banking. Languages, volunteering work, inventions & patents, unusual achievements, favorite books, interests, etc.
