The career trajectory for people today is much different than it was for their grandparents. Gone are the days when one could expect to work one is entire life, without interruption, for a single employer. In part, this is because of the Great Recession from 2007 to 2009, when many people lost their jobs. However, younger workers are also increasingly willing to job hop in order to find their perfect life balance. This might involve a change in career, the decision to stay at home with young children, or even taking time out from a career to travel or engage in volunteer work. Review these samples below for help in handling specific situations and non-traditional work histories.
A resume is used by an employer to determine an applicants suitability and fitness for a particular position within a company. As such, a resume template should always include several pieces of basic information: contact information, relevant work experience, education, and a list of related skills and abilities. A lot of what is involved in the construction of a resume is framing your skills and education in a light that shows just how much you can do for the employer. It is important to include a list of previous achievements, job skills that are transferable to the new position, and address your qualifications to perform each of the responsibilities listed in the jobs description. A resume should always remain keenly focused on the job for which you are applying. In your employment history, include only those jobs with cognate skills with the new position. For example, if you are applying for a job at a software development firm, it is completely irrelevant to list a job you held at McDonalds throughout high school.
Effective technology resumes clearly show the candidates technical skills a hiring manager should not have to go fishing for this information. An excellent way to include technical knowledge is to add a Technical Summary or Technical Expertise section to your resume. Break the section into subcategories so the reader can quickly scan through your knowledge of programs and applications. Possible categories include technical certifications, hardware, operating systems, networking/protocols, office productivity, programming/languages, web applications, and database applications. List only those programs/applications that you could confidently discuss in an interview. The reader should not be impressed only by your technical qualifications, but should also find you to be likeable and well-suited for the team. Soft skills such as interpersonal communications, ability to work collaboratively, and commitment to achieving corporate goals are just as desirable as your computer skills. In other words, your resume needs a personality. You can highlight some of these skills in a career summary section of your resume.
